Day 17: Hello, My Name is God

Sometimes the words we use to describe things we don't yet have language for can limit us. Last night in a group I am a part of we were discussing what we call the higher power that holds all things together.  One of the women said that as she has shifted to relate more to the feminine face of God that she is surprised that she struggles with the word Goddess.

We talked about the words that we use for God and most of us have moved away from the institutions that formed much of our thinking and are looking for words that aren’t loaded with baggage and are spacious enough to bring us into deeper communion with the Divine.

I’ve found that I often use the words Divine, Source, Loving God, Mystery or Creator. It’s been difficult to switch my brain to use different words after so many year of indoctrination that included a very masculine view of God.

I think most people agree that however we describe the higher consciousness that is behind the universe, we are limited by our own consciousness.  The words we use matter because they help us to express ourselves in relationship with the Divine. As we deepen in our spiritual journey we may find the language of a previous season no longer feels adequate. We may also find that adopting new language doesn’t feel comfortable - yet.

Whatever title or label you use to describe the higher power is personal to you. I have a friend who uses GUS (Great Universal Spirit). It’s not like God wears a name tag.
