Day 20: The Sound Effects of Aging
It started out as a long, slow exhale when I sat down after I’d been on my feet for a while.
“Aaaahhh!”
My bones and muscles were relieved to settle into a comfortable chair.
And then it began happening in the morning when I got out of bed. Another little groan would escape as I started moving around.
It doesn’t really bother me, but sometimes I sound like I’m about to make the final serve at Wimbledon when all I’m doing is getting out of the car.
This week I noticed how often my friend and I make noises when we get up or down after we’ve been in one position for a while. We’ve been laughing about it.
And wondering if it’s simply become a habit.
I looked it up. Apparently, making the occasional groan or moan when changing position is pretty common as we get older. Muscles and joints aren’t quite as cooperative as they once were. We can find ourselves providing accompanying sound effects.
I’m undecided whether to lean into it.
At this rate, I’m well on my way to becoming the Maria Sharapova of my generation.Minus the tennis.
